I'll come in late to this discussion:

Best - Lofty from any direction, particularly from Shepherd's Hill Rd and Upper Sturt Rd. My opinion is that the best climb has to be the highest point in the city. I can't bust a lung and get to the top of a climb and feel any satisfaction if i can see a higher peak in the distance! However, Lofty fails miserably for facilities at the top - and I make this comment in comparison to, say, Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane. No cafe, ice cream, atmosphere etc........

Worst - Not sure what 'worst' means, cos all climbs hurt you, which means they're great! But I'll vote for the 30m of ****ty delaminating asphalt on the last left hand turn before Eagle on the Hill on the old freeway route. At that stage of the climb, you don't need the ground moving under you to add to the hallucinations of the pain.

Toughest - Corkscrew. Full stop.

Most Scenic - I've only climbed Greenhill Rd twice (both in the last week, so I'm jumping on the badwagon a bit) but it's spectacular. Willunga Hill not far behind.

The above selections are tainted by a nasty accident whilst riding in Jan 09, so I have a preference to the bike tracks now!

I have just ridden Checkers for the first time.
As you near the S-bend at the bottom and see it first the first time, going up and up and up, it would have to be one of the most daunting hills psychologically.
Give me the curves of corkscrew any day. I find most hill are harder in the head than the legs- luckily i am bloody minded.

Nice ride though, even with the flock of ducks on the other side who tried to turn themselves and me into pate on the fast downhill stretch.

Living on Linear Park just off Gorge Rd means I have an awesome ride which includes up and down Corkscrew, onwards and upwards through Kangaroo Crek Dam, continur on to Cudlee Creek and then off to Fox Crk and back down then back home. I have only done the three climbs in the one ride once. Mostly, I am straight through to Cudlee and back so only Kangaroo Creek Dam is in the ride.

I find it is quite a reasonable ride traffic wise depending on the time you ride it. I am also finding the traffic on the road heading up and back more and more aware of me as a cyclist.

I have ridden with a mate of mine from South of Adelaide who usually does Willunga and he reckons it's one of the most picturesque rides around.

One of the toughest hill climbs was in Grand Slam #5 last weekend when after approx 170km, we turned up a road that I think was called Deviation Rd, near Balhannah - that was tortchure!!

The old freeway is the best as there is no traffic and cars hurt when they hit you. I still hurt and it has been 16 months since the accident. Climbing early in the morning when the sun is rising or clear evenings when the sun is settings is great for the views. Although not in Adelaide I think Tawonga Gap, My Beauty side is a climb that has hurt me the most. It is not the hardest climb but the last two times my back injury has made it torture.

I'd agree with those climbs. Montacute is great.
I've been riding Lower Hermitage Rd lately (runs between North East Rd and One Tree Hill Rd). It is a really good ride in both directions with little trafic and a very tough climb at the north end (probably 15-20%). The last section is smooth dirt but the road is about 85% sealded now.
edited by Ian S McGraw on 14/08/2009
edited by Ian S McGraw on 14/08/2009

Did Torrens Hill this arvo, agree it's steepish but a bit boring and not very long... Was pleased to get up Gorge Rd (Kangaroo Creek) without using the lower two gears, I think the guy flying past on his motorbike at 200km/h probably sucked me up the hill.... I must admit I used the lowest cog on Torrens Hill Rd though....

I'll jump on the Greenhill Rd bandwagon, it's a great climb, I'm also yet to do it under 30 minutes but we can't all be Alberto Contador.. It's a great long climb... Great view at certain spots and you're climbing to what I imagine is the highest point in Adelaide (I'm guessing Mt.Lofty is the highest point in Adelaide!)... The other thing Greenhill Rd is good for is coming down, it's a brilliant descent..

Michael,
Yeah I agree with Greenhill Road. Nice 7.3 km of climbing up to bus stop 19. Lots of people fear it because of traffic (only risky if you have cars coming past you from both ways at the same time). It is particularly good for a training ride due to its length. I usually ride it really well for the first 2.5 km then die a slow painful death Always makes you stronger if you persist all the way. Havent cracked a sub 30 yet but come close numerous times. The other ride mentioned by JDL re: Torrens Hill Road is a bit insane but only 1.1 km so most people should be able to grit their teeth for the grind up, however it is a fairly straight climb so can be a bit boring. The climb for mental toughness easily goes to the Corkscrew - sometimes you are left wondering there aint no gear low enough.....everybody whinges about it, and havent met anyone enjoying it Havent even found any climb here in Indonesia that compares (no car here would be able to climb such a hill here in Indonesia as most are underpowered - hence the roads if not washed out are good for bike hill climbs).

I'd like to nominate Greenhill Road as well for the same reason given by Michael...it just keeps going and going and going with stretches of 8-9% at points that go for a km in length.
Certainly one for the mental toughness.
Obviously it's no Mont Ventoux but it's tough enough for weekend warriors!

Having now done Fox Creek for a second time, I now think this is a really nice climb...quite scenic...and a good short challenge.
Forest Range and Ashton are nice steady climbs and not too tough.

Old Freeway is nice and a decent distance to make it a challenge, but usually quite busy.
edited by Redlad on 2/09/2009

I'd like to nominate Greenhill Rd in two categories:

Toughness - not because it's particularly steep, but it just keeps going and going at an even gradient without any respite. I find that more of a mental challenge than, say, the old expressway.

Scenic - really nice views of Adelaide on the way down. But don't look at them for too long :-)

Message from Matt Sarre

If you're travelling south and want to climb, Chandler's Hill Rd, Education Rd, Bains Rd and Cox Hill Rd all head up the same ridge and offer varying lengths (2-3km) and challenges.
Oakridge Rd is fun too - make sure you take the left turn at Homestead Dr and go all the way to the top. It gets steeper the further it goes until it reaches 18%+.
Has anyone ever ridden My Alma Rd? It's near Inman Valley and it's ridiculous. It has several sections with each one harder than the last it seems and you have to ride all the way until it turns into dirt after the summit (so you know when you've arrived) which makes it not well travelled. I've only ever done it on my MTB but I've ridden Sheoak and Mt Alma is at least as steep and much longer - and the road surface is much better. Toughest hill I've seen in SA. Must have a crack on my Roadie sometime.
edited by Matt Sarre on 6/08/2009

Thanks to the guys who suggested Woodland Way, never knew about it and it looks like a good challenge.. Will give is a try.. Can you tell me though, is it bitumen all the way through back onto Norton Summit Rd at the top (via Teringie Drive I guess)? Fell for that trap before, following a great road/climb only for it to turn into dirt....

Also what are the thoughts on Torrens Hill Rd (between Gorge Rd and Paracombe), any good? I'm surprised I've never done it as it's a good way to get back across from Gorge Rd etc to the North Eastern suburbs where I live... I think the turn-off to it off of Gorge Rd has always looked a little too steep after a long ride! Weak, I know..

Its a little out of town but the climb out of Sedan heading back to Mt Pleasant is pretty good, I think that I know every inch of Norton Summit but enjoy it everytime (almost never any traffic on it early in morning), Woodland Way is short but tough, as is Blackburn Drive in Crafers (just off Shurdington Drive on way to Mt Lofty summit), Greenhill Rd is best of "longer" climbs (for Adelaide anyway) but road surface is pretty crappy and a bit of traffic about, good long climb up Upper Sturt Rd all the way but traffic is terrible, Aldgate Valley Rd - heaven on earth!, haven't yet ventured down there but they tell me "Little Italy" is pretty good (scenic and good climbing), Checker Hill is closest I've come to getting off!

Damien
