health is the best wealth nathan. its the best investment and it provides the best returns.

we all know what foods, drugs, drinks etc are hard on the organs when we have full function of them. when one is removed or injured, we gotta be even more diligent. its easy to feel that becoming healthy is boring, but we know deep down that you get to have more fun. real fun.

if we dont make time for our health and wellbeing, our body will FORCE us too at some stage.

your on the right single track nathan. keep on spinn'n.
edited by harley j on 3/02/2010

Nathan, I had my spleen removed 16 months ago and was back on bike after approx 1 month, I now ride approx 250km/week and am racing vets most weekends. It doesn't seem to have affected me at all and I'm still getting stronger. It is just like any major surgery you need to see how you feel. I Assume that you had laproscopic surgery which will have you up and about weeks/months before open surgery.
Good Luck with the recovery.

Message from Nathan Wicker

Hi all,

As I write this i'm currently sitting at home recovering from what was a bad downhill MTB accident last weekend that led to the removal of my spleen! Anyway, to give you an overview, I race DH competitively here in SA, do a lot of road training for cardio and strength and have recently (before the accident) been thinking of trying my luck out at the crit races over summer.

I'm just interested in hearing any advice or things you may know about similiar situations with spleen injury and how they can have an effect on cycling? My doctor told me I should be fine to compete again in another 6 weeks or so, allthough I might play it safe and leave it a little longer than that. I just dont wan't to find myself being rushed back to hospital because i've overdone it on a hillclimb / downhill etc and rutured something inside me again!
edited by Nathan Wicker on 10/12/2009
