I live near a popular hill climb called Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane Qld Australia.
Your website lists its average gradient as 10.6%.

However, I don't get that from the other parameters on your site i.e. elevation gain= 224metres total distance= 2390 metres.
I work out gradient thus:

hypotenuse^2 = rise^2 + run^2
where rise = 224 and hypotenuse=2390

Solving for run, I get a gradient of 9.4%

How do you guys measure gradient??????

I plotted it on a sat. photo and got alt gain 250m, distance 2399 which gives 10.4%.

I get 9.37238% by dividing climb over distance...

how do you know it is correct ?

The question has been asked before, where do you get the land altitudes from if you find a new climb-but was not answered.

Using the gmap pedometer thing you get 10.4 for the back and 9.5 for the front.

What's the start point for your front figure? Some guys take it from the Botannical Gardens. Others start from Slaughter Park.

Are you using the start mark from Kendalls Coot-tha Challenge TT for the back? If not, that might explain the diff in rise, as the TT starts up the hill a bit near Simpsons Road.

First rise after the quarry turn off for the front. There is no-one in Adelaide that can help you when local clubs use their time trial lines.

We went through all this before here when every different club painted a line on the road for the Norton Summit climb.

The gradient was imported from the old website, but we have now updated it to 9.4%

If either the Climb or Distance that calculates the gradient (Climb / Distance * 100) are wrong or if the description on the ride needs to be more detailed as to the starting point please let us know.

Hey thanks for gmap. I thought you meant some hardware GPS thing. Great resource.

I believe BDO Kendalls is the only legal TT up Coot-tha. They had 2000 in it 2 weeks ago.
I think the variation is due to their start point, which is up the rise a bit and gmap gives this:

finish = 281 metres.
start = 81 metres
rise = 200 metres
distance ridden 2320metres
gradient = 8.65%

I wanted to clarify gradient for a spreadsheet that let's Kendall participants calculate power to weight ratio.
The fastest guys would have done >6watts/kg over 7 minutes.

i found the same with the Hawkesbury LO Hill Climb Average gradient:

my legs wish it was 4.1% but they know it is 7.14%

het brew, yeh i live near mt coottha 2 n i hear lots of different gradients so i just got the official distnace n elevation n bobs ur uncle
