I have a Trek US Postal edition Road bike with Shimano 105 Cranks and gear but with a Durace 12-27 Cassette. Apart from weight what advantages are gained by upgrading cranks etc to Ultegra/Durace to match the cassette???
Any thoughts for us weekend warriors?

Apart from the weight, you could be (a) embarrassed about having "105" visible on your bike at the cafe (b) a strong enough sprinter to notice the minor improvement in crank stiffness (c) wanting to get rid of a pile of money for tax purposes.
105 is perfectly good stuff, harder-wearing than DA, and your credit card is probably still suffering from the purchase of that cassette (over $200 from PBK last I saw!)

+1 don't bother upgrading the crankset. You won't notice a difference.
If you're itching to upgrade something get some new handlebar tape and your bike will feel like its brand new (well... that always works for me anyway)

From what i have seen, not much difference apart from less weight. For that you get less durable too.

Yeh .. have now noticed that you point it out that the tape is looking abit tacky and worn. Maybe a trip to PBK will solve that.

It is nice to have a grouppo that shifts nicely without skipping during that sprint or some brakes that dont squeal at you when you come to a screetching halt before you hit that car door....shimano, sram, campagnolo who knows??? In the end I bought Mavic SSC with friction down tube shifters with which Im comfortable with, besides its something noone else is likely to have and lots of bling on a retro cafe bike - or ride with pride on a Tuesday Night Expresso Ride. Search your sole and see what you really feel you can live with....
