Hello riders,

I am relatively new to cycling and keen to get better at riding up hills. I want to ride up new Belair Road and wondered if there is anyone or a group who does this already who I could tag along with? I was hoping to do it at night, around 6:30 or 7pm on a wed or thursday night. Any advice or feedback greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Abbie Thomas

I know someone who used to live up there and ride up and down it at night with no problems from hoons or people who could not see bike lights.
It is a relatively safe road to do at night for sure, same thing can not not said about Kensington Rd, the local 4wd owners think they own the road too.
Greenhill Rd is another good one at night too, steep and windy enough to slow the cars down, not sure about Norton Summit at night though.

Hi,
New Belair Road is one of the best climbs in Adelaide. It has nice deep corners to help keep out the way of the traffic. It is better to ascend it during the day outside peak hour times. Night time riding is okay as you can spot the headlights as they appear from behind and move out the way. Hope you hae fun climbing it. Recommend the cafe Rimini in Blackwood near the round about as you will probably be looking for a drink after the climb.

Hi Abbie,

If you're new at this, you're probably better off building up your fitness and bike skills in slower groups on flat rides (e.g. Megabike or Cobwebs on Sat morning) and practicing climbing by yourself initially without the distraction of chasing faster groups. Once you get to know riders of similar strength and weight on flat rides, try to arrange climbs with them. Norton Summit is the most popular climb in Adelaide - even, not too steep and low traffic volume, but New Belair Rd isn't bad.

There's lots of good advice about climbing technique online, to help you avoid bad habits.

(Where have you been lately, Robert?)
