Just wondering if anyone has any records on a Polar or Garmin type monitor of their record of going up Nettle Hill on the last grand slam ride. I struggled up the last 20metres and also did the same hill again last tuesday and seemed to get worse at it not better .... i.e. couldnt get a rythm going etc. any idea on the gradient and average speed most of you got up that beast????

Dwayne, I've not ridden this climb, but i've run it through the Gmaps-Pedometer website - check it out it's a cool way to plot your favourite routes and climbs point to point, including altitudes.
As far as Nettle Hill goes, I tracked it heading northwards, with a start at the junction of Hindmarsh Valley Rd and ending at the junction of Hindmarsh Valley Rd, crossing through Reservoir Rd and Sawpit Road giving a total distance of 5.3km with an avg. gradient of 3.5%. Total climbing of 186metres. However, dissecting the climb though the first 1.3km looks to be pretty up and down, and with a starting alt. of 52 metres after 1.3k to Reservoir Rd you've only climed to 67metres (avg. grad of 1.1%). Then onto Sawpit Road at 2.4k you've ascended to 101metres, giving an avg. gradient of 3.2% from Reservoir Rd. At Sawpit it seems to get interesting (and this is possibly the point of the climb you are referring to). From Sawpit Rd for the next 1.3km there's total climbing of 126 metres, giving an avg. gradient for this section of 9.6%, a nice solid climb. The last 1.5k looks to be pretty flat with 11 metres of climbing at 0.7%. I've attached the link for the website!

Thanks .... sadly for me it seems greater than 9.6% most of the way up from the sawpit intersection to the top. Might need a lighter bike ..... or just maybe, maybe, need to sadly get a bit fitter and toughen up on the great bike ive got. Would be interesting to see some times posted for the climb if anyone is interested, cause that last kick hurts. Does me anyway.

Dwayne, possibly the new Bell Sweep helmet you bought on Pro Bike Kit is slowing you down.

I realise you acquired it from the northern hemisphere, but perhaps you should not wear it back to front.

Fair point, wondered why the straps kept getting in my eyes and it was hard to breath. I should have kept the bubble wrap it came in for you in case you have another " expedition"
