Hi All, i have recently started out on the bike again after a 2 year hiatus. Unfortunately during that time i sold my good bike and most of my gear so I'm basically starting from scratch again which is fine. I used to run a 06 Specialized Tarmac and had it fitted out with a full Dura Ace Groupset and Ksyrium SL wheels - unfortunately to get this same bike back new it is going to cost a few $$$. Anyway, I decided on an Orbea Vento as my new ride. It's a pretty good bike and runs the Ultegra SL which isn't noticeably different to the Dura Ace I had (in my opinion anyway). The one thing that does suck on the bike is the wheelset. It is the shimano RS 20 and it is crap!!! I'm going to get new wheels and was hoping for opinions. I would like to get some more SL's but a bit dear at this stage.

With the budget I have I think I have narrowed it down to 3 - Ksyrium Elite 2010, Shimano RS 80 or Fulcrum 3's. Ihave ridden the elite's before and unfortunately struck a bad batch and had spokes coming loose all the time, but when they were right they went OK. I've heard the RS80's are pretty decent. I don't really know much about Fulcrums.

Essentially this is going to be my everyday ride. Commuting and then some longer rides on weekends in the bunch and I want to try and get maximum output for my input.

I'm sure this questions probably gets asked everyday but any opinions you lot have would be appreciated.

Cheers

Krt

It looks like everyone might be sick of answering this question. I should have read some of the previous posts first!!

After reading one reply to another post I have been in touch with Greg from TWE (I cant remember who posted it, but thanks)
If he can deliver the wheels he described for the price he said, my search is over.

Woo hoo!!

Hi Krt,

A friend of mine bought some wheels from TWE a while ago, and we unpacked them at my place. They were packed
without any protection for the rims at all, with the result that one of them was noticeably dented due to a knock in
shipping.

He's happy with the wheels and riding them, so it can't be too bad, but he did tell Greg, so I'd check that he's wrapping
them in something like pipe insulation. I've never bought wheels by mail order, so I don't know what standard packing
practice is.

Cheers,

Michael

Bought wheels from overseas, always well packed in a standard wheel box - never any issues

Kurt,

I bought my Fulcrum 3's from overseas and they were fine. Received them about a week after ordering them, got the guys at Corsa Cycle Centre to put them on as well as some new brakes I bought and they've been the best thing I've purchased.
I'd recommend them highly to anyone.

They were delivered in a standard wheel box, no issues.

Matt.

I purchased the RS 80's from wiggle a few months ago. Well packed, only cost me $650 on 20% sale. Ride much better then the training wheels that i had-very smooth. I havnt riden on anything else so cant comment on what they are like compared to the more expensive wheels. But for that price it was too hard to resist.

I run a set of Aksiums and they do me fine, I am 85kg and they hold my weight well. I am not a shimano fan, the rims don't seem to last. I think I would go with Ksyrium Elite but I have been told the Fulcrums are great wheels now.

I got my wheels from OS, even the R-Sys wheels ($1200) which had the recall turned out ok. I sent the recalled wheel back at PBKs expense and they sent me a set of Aksiums and a new front R-Sys wheel.

Some places offer free shipping on orders (Wiggle $100 and Chain Reaction $490) Chain Reaction have Ksyrium Elite210 for $700, Fulcrum Racing 3 2010 for $872)

I like the AM Classic wheels as well, the new CR420 wheels look great and are at CellBikes.com.au for $749

Thanks for the replies. I was gonna go with Greg at TWE but was looking at some wheels at an Adelaide bike shop and got Fulcrum 3's for 750 bucks. Couldn't pass them up at the price so I'll see how we go....

Cheers

Kurt,

Pity you went for the Fulcrum's, have had friends with fulcrums who have had issues with hubs, spokes, rims, etc. Personally, I ride the Ksyrium Elites (2009) and they're great. No issues whatsoever. And, for the love of god, do not buy R-SYS ever! Carbon spokes have been found to shatter/break and cause massive accidents (look up youtube) and they recalled them all. Somehow, Mavic thinks that despite rectifying the problem, they'll still sell. Dunno about that one.

Peace

I guess I'll find out one way or the other. I actually ad Ksyrium elites and must have struck a bad batch - I had spokes coming lose after 40km's. Took them back to my LBS and had them trued only to have them come loose again. Mavic were aware of the problem and upgraded me to the SL's which was very nice. Didn't have any trouble with the SL's at all, just couldn't afford to get another set right now so the Fulcrums are on deck. I'll post a review after I've don a few hundre K's

Kurt, if you do a search of reviews for Elite's on the internet you'll find the rear wheel going out of true is a common complaint. Seems to be pretty frequent.
The SL's are nicer until the rim starts to split where the spokes screw in. Again a common complaint and this recently happened to one of my riding buddies and it cost him $400 to get it fixed.
Guess you can hear a "hard luck" story about any wheelset!

I've had my 3's for about 4 months now and not one single issue so far...apart from all my PB's coming down that is!

I don't think you will get much difference between the Elites and F3's...people will have issues with both at some stage or another. People can quite often take what they read on the net as gospel, I am sure if you searched hard enough there would be as many horror stories and top reviews on both. Understand what you mean Redlad, but just bang in problems with F3's and I am sure there will be plenty. Good to hear the PB's are tumbling down.

Spot on Daniel. I read reviews about the 3's non-drive side spokes rotating if you're a larger rider. I was around the 88kg mark when I bought them but I've not seen this problem...yet, and hopefully won't.
But I looked at a few different wheelsets by different manufacturers and you can find horror stories for any. Most of the time you find people write a review because they either love something or they hate it, not normally those people without an opinion either way so you always need to take reviews with a pinch of salt..

Yep for sure, unless you are dead keen on one type (ie Elites) and type in "Why are Elites so good" and then "Why are F3's so crap".

Alright, so we have the wheels sorted....what about bars? Carbon or alloy? Still commuting and longer weekend rides with a view to racing again .....eventually. Any thoughts?
