Hi all,

Thinking of upgrading to a new CELL Victor Compact Carbon and was curious to know what people thought of CELL or if they have bought this particular bike.

http://cellbikes.com.au/p_210_CELL__VICTOR_COMPACT_CARBON__Looking_For_ULTEGRA_SL_w_Mavic_Aksiums

Any suggestions on something similar would be great, but I haven't found much at this price range.

I should add cause I'm knew to hill climbing is an 11-23 cassette hardcore?

Should I perhaps get something else like a 12-25 or just persist until i get more strength?

I've never heard of CELL but on the face of it that looks like a reasonable deal.. I reckon you'd be better off with a 25 for riding in the hills. My bike has Ultegra SL but with a 105 cassette which is 11-25. I rarely use the 25 except for on Corkscrew or Checkers but it is handy to have.. I don't reckon you'd miss the 11..

Maybe it's just the light but in the photo those don't look like Ultegra SL shifters, they don't look "ice grey".. Might pay to check..

Hi,

I purchased a Cell Swift in September last year. I have no complaints about the bike, it is certainly value for money. I probably went a size too big for me but that is a risk you take buying a bike over the net rather than having one fitted at a LBS. The Cell site has a heap of recommendations from satisfied customers mainly to do with the speed of delivery and customer service but I had a fairly negative experience in this regard. The bike took a week and a half to arrive and some of the clothing I ordered with it did not arrive. It took a month of phone calls and finally a fairly rude ****ed off email before the owner of the shop took care of the matter and I got a bike multitool and a free pair of knicks plus my missing items. I have ordered once more off them since and again it took more than a week for the package to arrive. I am in Strathalbyn so not really off the beaten track.

Unless you're already pretty light and strong, you'll probably need the 25 for some hills - trying to climb without a low enough gear is just going to discourage you and hurt your knees. Many beginners even need a 27 or a compact crankset!

If you can't get the 12-25 as an option, buy one separately and put the 11-23 on the shelf until you think you can do without the 25, or just sell it.

I agree with Michael Warner re the 27 cog for beginners. I'm a big bloke with twice the normal rolling mass (ahem, body weight!) of most weekend-warriors and although I can mostly survive uphill in the 25 cog, there are three or four climbs around Adelaide where my 27 cog has been the saviour for a rider of my ability. Most other cyclists flog me to the top of climbs, but my 27 has given me the same satisfaction as them upon reaching the top without stopping.

For someone new, 11-23 is very hardcore. Lots of cadence is the way to go, I'm not a beginner and use a compact crankset with 25!
I'm always riding past the guys with low cadence on the hills
Evan pro's use a compact when training. In fact, 11/50 is a taller gear ratio than 12/53, so if you know your setup well, you can select the right ratios to match anyone else with a standard & 11-23 setup. Only the sprint to the line is where someone using 11/53 could have an advantage.

Thanks very much for all the advice guys

I ended up buying this

http://www.azzurribikes.com/product_03.php?mid_class=A001&small_class=001&xs_class=001&psn=15

Simple reason for ditching the CELL for something else was actually being able to be fitted here in adelaide. Also this is a full carbon bike for 500 bucks less so it let me blow that on nice shoes and pedals

It has a 12-25 cassette too which looks to be a good compromise.
