Oh Yes...!, how sweat it is. After 3 years of being so close to a big win, man that must have been frustrating.
Congrats...!!

Congratulations to Cadel Evans, Australia's first road world champion. Maybe now he might move on to a decent team? With the support of a good team, can he win what he really wants to win, the TDF?

I don't think it'll help him move to or recruit a better team, unfortunately - other pros don't seem to find him an inspiring leader, since he's a bit of an introverted loner and not shy about bagging his team (often justifiably) in public.
Other Aussies in a race like the WC are probably the best support he's ever going to get, and the chances of him ever winning a Tour are close to nil :-(

Pretty good points I reckon Michael - just a bit too eccentric to be the type of leader that can win the Tour, especially when his key strength is dogged determination rather than bursting away.

Cadel seems to be a decent bloke. However his painful honesty and quiet understated persona do not seem to endear him to many. My guess is he will stay with SL (they appear to appreciate him even if they have shortcomings: money... dedication to EU classics esp Belgian ones and perhaps not the best DS), , foster the next generation, win a few classics and maybe the Vuelta...

When Lance was questioned about his attitude towards the press & some other riders he said " this is a bike race , not a popularity contest " ! If Cadel had the sort of backing that Lance had with U.S Postal his two second places in the Tour would certainly have been Tour wins & he wouldn't have been left floundering on the side of the Sierra Nevada climb in this years Vuelta so would probably have won that as well . Perhaps honesty doesn't win you friends but it's what is most lacking in the sport of cycling by all accounts .

In 07 and 08 you could look at the lack of support in the mountains as a real issue for Cadel, but as it showed this year with the Team TT back in you can pretty much mark Silence Lotto dropping a couple of minutes here....unless they get the Team TT sorted then Cadel will not be a serious threat. Lance has already pulled across his boys from Astana to RadioShack and has always dominated the Team TT. edited by Daniel Kelly on 7/10/2009

Well, if you have the talent and financial backing of an Armstrong, you don't need to be popular, since you won't have to trade favours with other teams out on the road, and the money and prospect of being on a dominant team make recruiting pretty easy. But in fairness, he did often make efforts to fit into the culture of the peloton.

That's why my feelings about the team TT are mixed - it's a great event to watch, but it blows strong riders with weak teams, like Cadel, out of the race. Ideally they'd drop it until after he retires :-)

So if the Tour was a three week series of individual time trials with each rider plugging over the mountains & into the cross winds all day by themselves , then who would be the winner ? ... Jens Voigt i expect - lol.

Jens maybe... interesting idea and good subject that would be subject of much debate... certainly I don't see LA winning

Sorry getting off topic ... it would be good to see Nick's thought the subject of a separate post. Back to Cadel.
To remove ambiguity, I am an unashamed CE fan. His honesty is refreshing and I believe he is loyal to his team (but this is not at the expense of his honesty). I hope he is part of a team that enables him to maximize his outcomes next year. Although you make your own luck, Cadel has certainly been saddled with an excess of bad luck of recent times.
And his attack was awe inspiring with a well deserved win the result... Go Cadel (for some time to come).

Gutsy (or silly) move going to a non Pro Tour team.... Hincapie's gone to them as well so I guess they're reasonably sure they'll get wild cards to the Grand Tours etc..

I'm going tonite, will give short review if you're interested. Here's a link on velonew re: Gavin Chilcott plans for his BMC team & pro tour licence. If anyone finds any more news, it would be appreciated if they post a link...
