Friend and I had a glass bottle (and a gobful of abuse) thrown at us last Sunday from a passing car (Dark Blue or Green Hyundai Excel we think, rego WGP ??? or WPG ???). Three 'fully sic' brothers methinks, doof-doof .... you know the types.
This happened about 300 metres short of Henley Square, travelling south. Its a tight road there and we were mindful of other road users. Being the day of Amy's ride, cyclists were in short(ish) supply. I'm kind of glad.
These were not bad or inconsiderate drivers. Rather they were nasty and dangerous little bastards who I hope no other riders were forced to encounter on anything other than their own terms. Beware, these were three bad little f*ckers, probably growing braver by the minute.

Good luck, but you will get nothing from the cops. A few months back I was pelted with stuff from 2 passing cars who circled around and went past 3 times. It was about 9pm on a thursday night going down Morphett Road in Warradale, and it scared the **** out of me. I called the cops that night and then filed a report the next day which supplied the cops with a license plate number for one of the two vehicles. Result?

A phone call 3 months later from a lady constable in Port Adelaide saying that they had spoken to the young man and his parents and could take no action as the little turd couldn't remember who else was in the car. Apparently they needed to identify the person in the rear seat who threw the stuff rather than the driver, as the driver is not responsible.

Farce. You are totally on your own unless you are injured, and even then insurance is your best bet to repair the bike and yourself.

Sorry to hear about the bottle incident. I have experienced similar myself and have to say police are not very effective at dealing with these issues. Sadly they treat serious incidents as trivial until someone is actually killed. It is really good to share information like this in these forums though, like what happened plus number plates (even part numbers) car and people descriptions and time / location (anything you can get). These cowards get away with their behaviour because they think they can't get caught. They often get gamer over time and if a pattern emerges then it can be what is needed to get some action. It is worth reporting to the cops so its on record but sadly it is up to us to build the case before anything will happen. If you have a decent local MP it could be worth letting them know and they may give cops a bit of a boot too. I've heard the line that the driver is not responsible if a passenger throws something but I don't buy that. With the general community intollerance to hoon driving rising I'd say there would be support in some senior areas to make an example of the driver (especially if a pattern emmerges).
Anyway stay safe keep talking guys (and girls).

Fair dinkum boys, was it the police at fault or the wankers throwing stuff at cyclists?

No, I'm not a cop.

Yes, I am a cyclist.

Not sure I get where you are coming from. Its pretty obvious the w%&kers are at fault for the attack and it is equally obvious that the police have a responsibility to take these matters seriously and take measures to follow up the incidents - especially if there is good information to identify the culprits and a pattern emerging. I'm not anti SAPOL but I have been disappointed with their objectivity and effectiveness when dealing with incidents where cyclists have been victims of car based attacks / assults. I'm happy to hear from nyone out there who has had the opposite experience.
Ultimately Garry, its not about attributing blame, but getting effective enforcement so there is less chance of history repeating.
Cheers

If a bottle was thrown at someone walking down the street, would it be taken more seriously.

I was hit by a car 5 weeks ago and it did not stop but what can the police do? No witnesses so nothing they can do. A pity I was left bleeding on the side of the road, at least I could call my dad to pick me up.

When I was a student living in North Adelaide over twenty years ago I got hit from behind by a car before the Morphett Street Bridge. The driver didnt bother stopping which seems the "norm". Thankyou to the Channel Ten camera man who stopped and picked me up and took me to the RAH with a few dislocated fingers, bruises etc, very much minimal injury. Cycling is very much about self preservation and not being in the wrong place before the trouble starts....

The list of injuried or cyclists killed on our roads is growing at an alarming rate...you can sit there and attribute blame to who ever you like, but it really misses the issue - just have to be more tolerant and learn to share.

First time on but i felt the need to say.... here in Vic the Police, not the "cops" have the legal right to ask the registered owner of the car to make "resonable enquiries" into the driver. "I loaned the car out to a lot of mates in the last few days so who knows" is a common response. The is no legal right to ask for the details of the moron passenger. Bluff and Bulls**t work on some occasions but rairly. They can only work with in the guidelines set by the Gov. I to have been forced of the road, abused and mistaken for a target. Inform the Police if it happens and especially if there is a hit run some do try and help.....especially those that ride.

Instead of ringing the police, drop in to a nearby police station. I've found that face to face you'll find an interested officer (who rides a bike) that will certainly take the problem report very seriously. My partner was struck by a vehicle (tried to turn left through them), filed the report at nearby Norwood police station; an officer (cyclist commuter) come out from back to help with the report and was incredibly helpful. There are some disinterested and bored police, but if you're courteous and friendly they'll look after you. The last thing the police want to do is help a red-light running psycho-cyclist zooming around left-indicating cars and proving a point with the law only when it suits them. Demonstrate you're not one of the (too visible) minority of idiot cyclists and it'll be fine.

first timer here too but cant let this one go,one afternoon riding along the esplanade virtually in front of the largs pier minding my own biz ,i get welcomed with a whack across my back by a carload of p****s,or thats perhaps what the 'P' on the back window stood for......not to mention ending up in the gutter ,but they all thought it was amusing givin me the bird,i was fortunate enough to get their rego so went to the police and filed a complaint ..after being told i would be contacted the next day for an update it was unfortunate i never heard from that officer again,i called back but everything just seemed too hard so i let it go....i feel as a cyclist i just have to cop whatever the public throws at me,even if i were the most law obiding citizen around, i just accept that im gonna cop it now and then...but the good days by far out weigh the idiots !!!
