*A few months back I was in a race in A grade going up a berg and a rider behind me said to Nick Gates (GT rider) 'Nick I can hardly breathe!' To which Gates replied 'Get off the f*&^ken dairy mate!'
*I remember back in 99 reading about Lance's recovery in the advertiser and it said 'Lance ommitted red meat, dairy and oils from his diet'. I stopped eating red meat after that as it always seemed to sit heavy in the gut. Not a problem if your a couch potato but when your trying to give your all..it doesnt help. Anyone can read Lance's book 'Its not about the bike' and he talks about ditching the dairy and fatty foods. Rip Esselstyn of www.engine2diet.com is one of Lance's best mates and a long time vegan athlete. Lance seeked rip to 'get me on the programme so I can get healthy..'
*Mark Cavendish in his book 'Boy Racer' says he doesnt drink milk cos it gunks his lungs and he doesnt eat meat cos it makes him fat.. Anyone can read his book for more info.
*Ivan Basso says : I dont eat eggs, omeletes or anything like that
*Cadel's wife Chiara recently said about a vegetarian lasagne recipie she makes for Cadel 750 ml milk (for Cadel, I use soy milk – lighter!)
*I know the Garmin crew when they had Allen Lim around would eat a low gluten/dairy diet to increase riders recovery/lung function.
*Levi Leipheimer is a vegetarian.
*Ever since Carl Lewis employed Dr McDougall to be his nutritional advisor, high carb, low fat vegan diets have steadily increased in the pro scene.
Back in the day riders would eat a steak for breakfast for 'strength'. Now even as an AFL footballer, if you ate a steak for breakfast you would get a slap from coach! A cyclist eating steak for breakfast these days would be looking to get dropped cos they bonked at the end of the stage from not consuming enough carbs. NOBODY gets dropped cos they ran out of protein or fat! We bonk for 2 reasons: water and or glycogen depletion.
Give it another 15-20 years and a high carb, low fat, low sodium, high calorie, plant based diet will be a generic prescription for health and fitness across the board.
