Hey all, it seems even though I don't do massive amounts of k's I still burn out nearly every year. It's now that time of the year for me and I'm down in the dumps. I've lost motivation and I rode today and couldn't get above 23kph on the flats! So what's the solution? what am I doing wrong? I usually do 3 weeks on, then a rest week of nothing or 1 light ride. Is there a cure? Is it just me? is there a preventative thing I should do in my training?

Daniel.

Hey Daniel, maybe you should re-assess your goals and ask yourself why it is that you ride? Usually a lack of motivation comes from a lack of direction ie. set goals that you are trying to achieve in cycling. Burn out usually comes from treating the sport as a job and not as fun or fitness so maybe you're taking it a little too seriously or maybe you just need something to specifically aim for and set a target.

Daniel ... "nearly every year" suggests not "every year". Was there something specific you were aiming for in the years you've had the energy to overcome the way you feel now. Are you anticipating the slump? I find a couple of short triathlons (even just arranged between mates) give me the variety I need to stay on track as I'm very easily bored. Variety is also the spice of life, I find. 50 laps in a swimming pool is good medicine if scenery is one of your motivators. Nothing reinvigorates my enthusiasm for the road between Chain of Ponds and Mount Pleasant more than a week of looking at a black line surrounded by tiles starting at 6am for 5 straight days. TDU stage 4 is motivating me now - see you at Burnside.

Daniel, perhaps your regime is too regimental... If you are going hard for 3 weeks then going easy for 1, then perhaps your body has developed into the routine? Mix it up a little. Try going hard for 6 weeks (or less, you choose) and then go for an easy fortnight. Try getting a MTB and hitting some trails or plan a trip to Bright or the Grampians or interstate somewhere to get a new buzz.

cheers and beers,
jd
