I was just wondering how many riders out there actually use a heartrate monitor for measuring their training intensity and if so what do you use ie. average heartrate, % of Max, time in zones etc. or do you just use it periodically to see how hard you're working?

I've used a heart rate monitor for about 15 years now & have tried time & time again to use it to control my training intensities , but i always find it virtually impossible to ride or run within a set zone of say 140 to 150 bpm. I know that keeping the intensity down will enable me to train more often & result in my having more energy the following day , but the fact is i just get ****ed off with holding back & riding or running slowly. So basically i ride by feel & just watch with interest to see what my heart rate will do on the day, if i'm really overtrained or tired then i'll be on my threshold at 150 bpm but if i'm fresh & well rested then my threshold will be at my upper limit of around 170 bpm & it will feel easier than the 150bpm did when i was overtrained ! Given the fact that my threshold will alter so much according to my state of recovery , it strikes me that using a set zone is not such a good idea ?

I use mine all the time, whether is cycling, tennis, running etc. Mainly to check how hard I'm pushing at certain points like climbs, tough points or running up hills.
I've used it for the City-Bay so I don't push too hard early & run out of gas. Usually try & keep to a certain heart rate to start & then increase towards the end & try to get close to max. heart rate as I cross the line.
I use it to see how many calories I've burnt during a session to compare it to my calorie intake & to see how many beers I can have that night.......Although that doesn't seem to always curb the intake..
