I usually do it on the weekends in the morning and I often don't see any cars. Might be different at other times.

Hi, I'm visiting from Sweden and thought I'd try the climb up Mt Keira (Wollongong). I had a look at it a few days ago and was wondering about the finish: is it the turn off to the right (Clive Bisset drive I think it was called) after Mt Keira lookout or is it the major intersection a km or two later (Picton Road I think)? Both are "turn-offs to Sydney". This isn't clear in the description...
Cheers!

Was extra crammed this morning...HEAPS of people out this morning including the Silence Lotto team. The hotel area was absolutely packed with cyclists this morning but hardly suprising on a day like today edited by Jase Milligan on 10/01/2009

Considering how close it is to the city, the New Norton Summit road is one of the quietest roads around in my experience. Most commuting traffic seems to use the Old Norton Summit road which is a good one to avoid in my opinion.

OK - nobody seems to be answering my query on the Mt Keira route finish. I measured the distance today (didn't even look at the time), forgot to look at the first turn off to Sydney, but checked at the second, major junction and that was 8 km. As the route description says 6.05 km it must finish at the first (Clive Bisset Drive). Can someone confirm this?
I'll post my time when I try it in a few days. I've been under the record time a few times but want to try an all out attack :-)
Cheers!

Hi Toni, a lot of the crew here are Adelaide people and I don't know how many people from the Gong get on the site. My only comment is to interpret what is stated on the c2m Mt Keira page and that is
Start Point: Second 40 km/h sign, rolling
End point: 3 way intersection (turn off to Sydney)
Looking at the dates of the times that are on that page, it was a popular climb in '05 - '06. So not many of that crew may get online nowadays. 6.05kms is the distance between start and finish.
Sorry.

Hi Toni, I'm in Adelaide as well, but I created a route on Veloroutes to find the end point of 6.05 Km. It finishes at the intersection of Queen Elizabeth st not Clive Bissell dr. The start point is just before the Southern freeway crossover (hopefully it lines up with the 2nd 40Km/h sign). Here is the link to see for yourself: http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=25852. If you switch to terrain, you can see that my start and end point also line up with the correct elevations (40m & 410m) so I'm confident it's right, but only you can confirm that. Veloroutes is still in beta so it's very buggy, the elevation profile didn't work this time, bummer! You can create your own maps, hopeful it will work for you. Good luck with the climb, I hope you smash the record! cheers

Thanks Cosmo and Jason! I agree that the data from your route looks suspiciously correct, Cosmo, but the finish you show is not a turn off to Sydney... Also the 40-sign is a bit higher up on Mt Keira road than your start was. My intrerpretation is that the start and finish are both slightly higher up. I used google to start a measurement from Clive Bisset Drive and backwards (downhill) and ended up where there is a 40 sign. I'm just going to interpret that as being the correct route. Maybe you could check the elevation? I don't know how you do that...
Once again, cheers for your help! I'll post my time :-)

At the end of the day Toni, this site is excellent as a training guide, so if your version of the ride does not correspond with the current (old) edition, then create your own version, save it as Mt Keira Two and use this location to post your times. Sometimes it really matters if all your training is working for you and this site helps you collate that.
cheers, jd

Sounds great, Jason. I'll ride it slowly so lots of people have a chance to beat the time!

Ride it slowly????, don't you dare, if you have the ability to break the records on this website then do it !! Jason forgot to tell you that this website links to the Australian Sports Commission’s National Talent Identification team, so breaking these records could result in your travel visa confiscated and you'll be forced to become an Australian citizen.....
Cheers
