Been training for this one all year and lost weight (7kg) and improved fitness which paid off big time. Used the majority of the frequent drink stops to keep the cramp away. Recognised lots of other riders who I often ride with. It was perfect weather, although had a firm head wind crossing the Barossa after Menglers heading for Seppeltfield, but still managed to ride well on my own and stay away in front of a large forming pack which was gradually looming behind me wanting to swallow me up. The hill climbing training which I have been doing all year paid off big time. Just kept rolling up any incline thrown in front of me. The ride into Nurioopta and beyond was a real dogs breakfast with a dangerous mix of cars, SUVs, trucks, motorbikes and hundreds and thousands of cyclists (sprinkled over the highway). I still had fresh legs for the last 15 km with the tail wind and was keen to hold about 40km/hr but the traffic was just too horrendous. Cant understand cars trying to drive up the main street of Angaston just 400 metres from the TDU finish??? (I will post something later with my thoughts about this situation which must certainly be changed for next year's event.) Thankyou for everyone who participated in this ride. It was good to always be able to find a pack/group to ride with.

Was a great ride. I did the 155km and this was my first time in the challenge ride so therefore wasn't worried about doing it in record time, just getting through to the end comfortably - and I did just that. Felt fine after too and well into the night. The only stops I bothered with were Mt Pleasant and the one before Menglers Hill. I noticed on the way to the start a lot of people made up their own start times and were on their way well before 6am. The start itself was an amazing sight - a massive sea of yellow on portrush road eager to get going.
I've never been anywhere near Menglers before but yeah, it was a bitch of a climb and but up there ok with lots of cheering and support of offer from the locals. Pretty straight run after that to the finish. Don't know what time i finished and again, didn't care. Just glad to have got there without incident
I wish BikeSA would pick their marshals a bit more carefully next time...some of them are a bit umm..'wierd' edited by Jase Milligan on 24/01/2009 edited by Jase Milligan on 24/01/2009

I did the full 155k & couldnt sit straight last night...big time sore ass cheeks !!! Couldnt believe how many cars & trucks were along the route. Got quite scary at times especially heading through the last few kms into Angaston. I found Menglers Hill to be not too bad, sure it was steep but only for 2kms really. Going up with the signs at 2km, 1km, 800m, 600m, 400m ,200m, 100m made it easy to break it down & zoom up. Although concentration was certainly interrupted by the Devil woman in the revealing red suit going up Menglers...wow !!!

I can't believe our luck it was a perfect day, so I went faster than planned. I did the full 155 km in 5hr, 17mins. The official 143 was done in 4hrs 55mins including all stops. I wanted to do it with no stops (just to get a feel for what it must be like), but reality gets in the way.... There was a guy filming the red devil when I went past so I'm hoping someone will upload it to youtube. edited by Cosmo Luppino on 24/01/2009

I also did the 155 ride, leaving at 6am. Surreal start, even the super slow start seemed appropriate at the time. Rode the 6.7kg super-clunker with light wheelset, and got quite a few comments about the rusty steel handlebars on the carbon TCR. Had a ball up the hills, but struggled on the descents. Dropped my chain 10 times along the way - one day I'll buy a front derrailleur. Mt Pleasant at 9.10am after stopping for a wee at Gummy. Started getting hints of leg cramps around Williamstown and didn't look forward to Menglers. Rode slow for 10km and found the legs behaved well up Menglers. As always, passed gobs of riders up the hill and found it quite OK, only to have them all pass me on the descent. The last 30km was rather frustrating, mixing with the mums and kids doing the local loop, and the poor cars stuck in a sea of yellow. I stopped 2km before the end on a grassy edge to "soak up the ambience"....and wait for the official Koester photographer to park and get in position. The finish was fun, managed a sprint to the line. Final riding time 5hr 20min. Pulled up well in the end. All up a great day.

Did the 155km, did it fairly easily, which was nice... Left in the second group (6:15ish?) and crossed the line at 12:44PM.. Stopped for drink-fills at Mt. Pleasant, Williamstown (wicked fruit cake), after Menglers and also at Seppeltsfield. Also may have watered a few trees on the way.. Ride time was just over 6 hours I think.. Climbed Old Willunga Hill for the TDU the day after so wasn't feeling too bad, the butt cheeks were a bit tender to start with though!
It was great that they had the KOM arch at the real end of the Mengler's climb this year, previously they've had it at the lookout entrance, which meant you'd gun it to the line and then realise you still had 500m or so (I guess?) to climb..
Does anyone know where/when the photos will be available? There are a few on the AdelaideNow web-site but not many..

Agree Bryan, cheeky devil's legs were in far better shape than mine half way up Menglers!!! Big thanks to all (riders/public) who encouraged everyone along the way. To anyone who knows SANDRA .... how did her supporters manage to be at FOUR different points along the route with their cardboard sign (well done ladies)????!!!!! Big thanks to the BMX boys in trackie dacs, flannies and lit durries (cigs) who provided the 200 metre escort through Williamstown, laughed so hard. Well spaced drink stops, plenty liquid, leg cramps at 12km to go (thank goodness for adrenaline ... damn it that adrenaline wore off at 02:30am next morning whilst deep in slumber ... zzz). Big thanks to the ever so patient drivers along the route and the patient riders who weaved their way to the end at slower than 'desirable' speed. WHAT AN EVENT. Three cheers to all. Big glum to the bi-directional headwind :-( post Menglers. Coast to Coast anyone? .... You betcha!!! 4.5/4/97 ... will be training hard now for faster. It's all about the bike!!! edited by No Chain on 24/01/2009

My friend and I rode back to Gawler to catch the train, if that counts. I rode to work that evening for a night shift, too, so I clocked up well over 200km for the day. Luckily there was a chocolate muffin in the lunch pack and plenty of time for a nap in the afternoon :-)
The ride was good, probably the most comfortable of that distance I've done, and we finished in a group with the Secret Squirrels, twin girls who do triathlons and are pretty strong riders - their picture was in the paper on Saturday. The only dodgy part was Mount Pleasant, which we hit just as those doing the shorter version were setting off. They filled the left side of the road, so our group was stuck on the wrong side at 40-45km/h, struggling to avoid the occasional oncoming car. The entire road should have been closed off for a while there.
It was nice to get it done before the heat of the day set in, but having to get up at 3:30am for a ride was ridiculous!
