I know it's not the "done thing" but does anyone know where I could get a crack in an aluminum road bike frame (Avanti Sprint) welded up? It's cracked on the weld just above the bottom bracket....

What you will have to do is strip back the paint in the area of the crack to see the total length. It might be better if you remove the bottom bracket assy and get it bead blasted ready for welding.
Some small amount of grinding to vee out the crack to improve the welds penetration will certainly help with strengthening the weld.
I have heard of some quality work done at an engineering shop in Adelaides northern suburbs with reasonable prices,so maybe you could try them. They are Calbic Engineering pherhaps you should give them a ring !!!.
Touch up your paint on the welded area with Holts Auto Spray they have a large range of colours !!
All the best,
Sam.

Thanks for that, we use Calbic a bit at work, I'll check them out, see if they're any good with bike frames. The bottom bracket's already out as it's stuffed, I was changing it when I noticed the crack. First time I've had the cranks off, crack would be hard to see with them on still so I have no idea how long it's been cracked...

Found this mob in Melbourne who look fairly impressive, going to see if they can do it also but Calbic would be even easier being here in Adelaide.. Thanks

Hi, How did you go with the Frame Repair? I've never cracked an aluminium frame, quite a few steel one though. I've found with steel that once they crack they will continue to give you trouble and are best decomissioned.

I did have a friend who cracked the head tube of his alloy avanti and he sent it back to the factory for repair. Good as new and he's had no probs, maybe try the local distributor of Avanti to see if that is feasible?

The frame's at a local metal fabrication place, where my brother works. They work with aluminium and do TIG welding quite a bit and are fairly confident they can fix it no worries.. I'm going to get them to a bit of extra bracing in as well so it hopefully doesn't crack again in the same area.. I'm not too fussed what it looks like, as long as the wheels go round when you turn the pedals...

If the repair doesn't work though I'll bin it and replace it with a steel frame..

JDL Why dont you go and buy yourself a carbon frame which will be lighter and more comfortable to ride than an ancient steel frame which could also crack.Theres plenty on the net that are reasonably priced including delivery. Those steel frames weigh a tonne and are no good for climbing get yourself a compact frame as an alrounder.
Best of Luck,
Sam.

Repair done.. Cost a carton of beer! Pic here: http://twitpic.com/1vox1/full Might look a bit ugly but hopefully it's strong enough and won't crack again.. Now to paint it and put it back together..

All don so this is a bit late - I had a cracked rear stay in a Viner and used Gripspot nr Melbourne see www.gripsport.com.au their business seems to be based around repairing alloy frames and having doing this for many years.

For repair of carbon frames I have seen some remarkable work out of De Grandis in Geelong see www.degrandi.com.au - fixed cracked top tube seat stay etc - I beleive a number of insurers are referring jobs there.
